About

A packaging concept for my cute well-being companion Sous, and an exploration of another element of design delight: surpise.

Ideation

While the possibilities seemed endless, I eventually decided that I wanted my packaging concept to be an experience related to the product that would sit inside. Because Sous is a product that encourages kitchen activity, I immediately thought of refrigerator and how I could play with all the doors.

I wanted to keep the experience of opening the different doors, as well as seeing all the objects kept on the exterior. Calendars, grocery lists, post-it notes, magnets, kids’ drawings— there are so many ways to decorate a fridge.

Making

During the making process, I started off with paper before moving onto chipboard. Once I had the measurements, design, and overall logistics figured out, I moved onto color. I opted for a traditional-looking gray fridge to really amp up the element of surprise and to stick with the colors Sous sported.

I made the interior of the package match the illustrations of the recipe cards so that at least one element of the packaging related to them.

Through this process, I learned how to use a UV printer which is able to print onto objects that are difficult to print on with traditional inks, such as metals, plastics, and glass. The printer uses inks which are applied to an object and then cured (dried) instantly by ultraviolet light.

While we were given chipboard to use, I would love to explore other materials in the future.
