About
For this project, I was asked to design my own potato peeler. I took functionality, comfortability, and aesthetics into account, and made sure to have my peeler be accessible to as many users as possible.
Brainstorming & Sketches
After testing out a cheap potato peeler myself, I got to work, thinking about a design that would work better and feel better in my hand. I also did a quick hand study, observing what ways my hand grabs or grips an object.
Low Fidelity Prototypes
I narrowed down my ideas to 5 main designs that I wanted to continue exploring.
Final Product
After finalizing my design via the clay prototype, I created a foam prototype next. I spray painted it to make it look more realistic.
I learned how to cast a mold, using the OOMOO silicone rubber mold mixture. With a mold for my design, I was able to make a hard plastic prototype of my peeler.
My design offers a comfortable rest for your thumb to sit on and apply proper pressure when in use. The top of my peeler is slightly indented inwards to emulate the tool that scoops out potato eyes. My potato peeler is on the smaller side, eliminating any clunky, clumsy movements that a larger peeler may provide.
