For this project, I was to identify an existing “bad design” and create an improved version. These “bad designs” around us could be something that doesn’t work well, something that works well but in the wrong context, or something that functions well but poses a long-term negative impact on an individual or the world at large.
I went forward an improved aesthetic with culinary measuring cups.
Market Research
After some research, I noticed that while there were many different types of measuring cups, there was always some small issue with the design. I was not able to find a product that had zero complaints at all. During my search, I looked at the products’ customer reviews and it seemed like people were appreciative of designs where there weren’t a lot of loose cups taking up space in a drawer. I saw that this was mainly achieved through the all-in-one designs or designs that could be displayed as a decorative piece.
Concept Sketches
As mentioned previously, I wanted to focus on the all-in-one and decorative designs.
Ideation
This was the design I decided to focus on. I wanted to explore a set that fit together visually and practically. I envisioned a few ideas like an organizational dish that could be held together via magnets or something of that nature. I chose to go forward with a pie set, but this product could be made in similar circular foods like cake, pizza, donuts, etc. Because I chose a pie, I wanted the crust to act as a handle, with finger slots imprinted along the edge.
Prototyping
I initially explored a version with a circle cut out the middle. The feedback I received was that it looked more like a cake than pie, which was not what I was going for so I made some design changes. I also made sure that each slice actually held the correct amount.
Making
I used chipboard and clay for this project to show what the final product would look like. In the future, I would either 3D print the design or use a food-safe, heat-resistant, stronger material.
